FAQ's

What is TMJ and TMJD?

TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which connects your jawbone to your skull, allowing you to speak, chew, and move your jaw. You have one TMJ on each side of your jaw.

TMJD stands for temporomandibular joint disorder, which refers to a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles.

  • Common symptoms of TMJD include:

    • Jaw pain or tenderness

    • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth

    • Headaches, earaches, or facial pain

    • Difficulty chewing or limited jaw movement

At TMJ Relief & Therapy LLC, we specialize in helping individuals find lasting relief from TMJD through personalized, non-invasive treatments tailored to your needs.

Does insurance cover TMJ Therapy?

No insurance does not yet cover TMJD Therapy.  However, many HSA and FSA plans will allow payment of TMJD Therapy.

What should I expect at my first visit?

During your first visit at TMJ Relief & Therapy LLC, I’ll begin with a thorough assessment to understand your symptoms, medical history, and jaw function. This allows me to tailor a treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.

Treatment typically begins at your first appointment and often includes therapeutic massage of the muscles connected to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), such as those in the jaw, neck, and shoulders. This hands-on approach helps relieve tension, improve mobility, and reduce pain.

How many treatments will I need?

While every case is unique, I typically recommend starting with a minimum of four treatments, scheduled twice per week in the beginning. This allows us to reduce inflammation, relieve muscle tension, and begin restoring proper jaw function.

As symptoms improve, most clients transition to once-weekly sessions until they’re able to maintain their results independently.

The exact number of treatments can vary depending on:

  • The severity and duration of your TMJD

  • Your consistency with at-home exercises

  • Your willingness to adjust contributing lifestyle habits (like posture, clenching, or stress)

My goal is always to help you achieve lasting relief as efficiently and effectively as possible.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Normal everyday clothing is just fine — there's no need for special attire. However, please avoid wearing earrings, as they can get in the way during treatment.

Since some techniques involve gentle work on the head, face, and jaw muscles, your hairstyle may be affected, and any makeup — especially heavier products — may rub off during the session. If you're planning something afterward, you may want to bring a small touch-up kit.

My goal is always to keep you comfortable and relaxed while ensuring the most effective care possible.

What should I do between sessions?

What you do between appointments plays a major role in your recovery. To get the best results, it’s essential to complete the exercises I provide at least 4 times per day. For optimal progress, I recommend aiming for 4 to 6 times daily. These exercises are designed to relax, strengthen, and retrain the muscles around your jaw for long-term relief.

In addition, it’s important to reduce or avoid habits that may be contributing to your symptoms — such as:

  • Poor posture (especially forward head posture)

  • Gum chewing

  • Nail or cheek biting

  • Clenching or grinding

  • Excessive talking or yawning widely

Your commitment to these small daily actions makes a big difference. Staying consistent between sessions helps us move forward faster — and helps you maintain your results more easily over time.
